Donne, John
(c. 1573–1631)
   Poet.
   Although Donne was born into a Roman Catholic family (he was a great-greatnephew of Sir Thomas more), he became an Anglican and was educated at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and at Lincoln’s Inn. He served in the household of Lord Egerton, then Lord Chancellor of England, but was dismissed in disgrace after secretly marrying Egerton’s niece. In 1615 he was ordained and in 1621 he was appointed Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Although he was one of the most famous preachers of his day, he is now remembered as a poet. He was the author of both secular and religious verse and he is one of a group known as the metaphysical poets. His poems are marked by extraordinary imagery and his religious verse shows a preoccupation with sin, death and judgement. T.S. eliot led a revival of interest in his work in this century.
